*Red Goldstone & Blue Goldstone

There is much debate about when goldstone was first created but there is an amulet excavated from 12th century Syria in a Pennsylvania museum which looks just like goldstone.

According to folklores, an alchemist, or more than likely, an Italian monk mistakenly spilled copper shavings into molten glass, which produced an element which was hard and glossy. This explains the names for this gemstone like, monks’ gold, monk's stone, and goldstone. (It is sometimes called Sunstone, but Sunstone is a natural stone whereas Goldstone is man-made. Although they are similar in appearance)

Some of the first glass we find in history comes from Roman glassmakers who developed the method of blowing glass to replace the heavy molded glass funerary containers and brought glass into the homes of the ancient people. It was due to this blowing method that the Romans and Greeks had nice windowpanes in their homes. It is glass that is blood red with tiny flecks of copper suspended within the glass. The process for making red glass, or purpurin, was lost through the centuries, because glass makers are very secretive with their recipes. Goldstone was most likely an “Aventura” discovery by the ancient Romans and re-discovered by the Miotti family.

Permission to manufacture goldstone in Venice during the 17th century was given to the Miotti family who was granted an exclusive license by the chief magistrate and leader of the Republic of Venice. With credit specifically going to the Venetian glass crafter, Vincenzo Miotti. It’s often referred to as aventurine glass based on the Italian word “avventurina” which means adventure, chance or accidental.

Some people believe that since Goldstone is just glass, it has no special properties. But it is important to realize that glass is associated with personal transformation and reflection. Copper, which is the shiny golden flecks, is believed to have properties which help with harmonizing relationships, attracting abundance and creativity.

It’s called the ‘Stone of Ambition’.  It promotes liveliness, energy, courage, and an optimistic attitude.  It increases the urge to achieve something, and confidence to accomplish any task.  A soothingly healing stone, Goldstone is believed to promote energy and vigor.

It’s also a gemstone of perception and knowledge, helping us to remember the light within the dark. It shows us the path to reach for the stars.

Another message related to Goldstone is that “sometimes you have to lose your mind to find yourself”. It could have something to do with the accidental creation of this rock which could have easily been discarded, but which ended up achieving distinction.

From The Book of Stones:

We know that much pagan thought, as exemplified in the famous phrase, “as above, so below,” suggests that the terms “inferior” and “superior” are unreal. The idea “as above, so below” evokes an awe toward Nature, a sense that we share consciousness with plants, animals, stars, and stone, and that all living creatures, including stones, share a consciousness with the Soul of the World…or the spiritual genius of the Earth.
