Animal Spirits and Animal Totems
While both animal spirits and animal totems play significant roles in various spiritual and cultural traditions, they are distinct concepts.
Animal spirits are often seen as guides or messengers that appear during specific times of need or transition, offering insight, protection, or lessons.
In contrast, animal totems are typically regarded as lifelong symbols or archetypes that represent an individual's core qualities or spiritual path, often linked to one's lineage or soul journey. Understanding these differences can deepen one's appreciation of how animals are interpreted in different belief systems.
To use animal spirits or animal totems, start by identifying which animal resonates with you personally, either through dreams, meditation, or repeated encounters in daily life. Once you have recognized your animal spirit or totem, you can learn about its symbolic meanings and qualities, then consciously invite these traits into your actions, mindset, and spiritual practices. Many people incorporate rituals, visualizations, or artwork representing the animal to deepen their connection and guidance.
Animal spirits may show themselves to us through dreams or even just daily life. When they appear, they are there to let us know there is a message. Look up how they live, what they eat, how they find food, or even how they construct or find their homes. See how this may appear in your life. What is their message? They could be there for your protection or maybe there is a lesson you need to learn. A new path you need to take.
Animal totems are always with you like your Guardian Angel is always with you. It may have been passed down through generations of your family. Find out about your lineage. It represents part of your essential qualities and core identity. It can be summoned to offer special skills, strengths, and survival instincts. Just remember that although it is with you it is also ancestral so other members of your family may call upon them too.
Animal totems play many complex and vital roles within your family such as representing your lineage, identity, spirituality, and social orders. They define responsibilities, govern relationships, and transmit ancestral knowledge through rituals and art. Totems serve as reminders of spiritual lessons, acting as visual aids for the preservation of oral traditions.
In many traditions, a reciprocal relationship exists where humans honor their totem, and in turn, the totem offers wisdom and helps maintain the balance of nature.
They teach respect for all life. The existence of a totem reflects the belief that all living things are interconnected. This worldview influences everything from social structures to hunting practices.
Some cultures use carved totems to use in rituals which reinforce cultural and spiritual identity. Some may choose to use a fetish (small carved animal) to represent its presence while doing a ritual or as a reminder, to appease the spirit associated by using sympathetic magic or hunting rituals.
If you feel drawn to an animal don’t think there can be only one. Some may find they have several. If you are drawn to one animal totem and several animal spirits, don’t be surprised. Animal spirits may come and go throughout your life. They will show themselves when you need them.
